The Regional Health Research and Development Consortium (RHRDC XI) sponsored a 2-day Basic Research Ethics Training last October 18-19, 2017. This was attended by various institutions in the region who has recognized Research Ethics Committees (REC) or are planning to establish a REC in their respective institutions. Those recognized RECs are accredited by the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB).
The training was facilitated by Dr. Ricardo M. Manalastas, Jr., Chair of the PHREB Committee on Information, Dissemination, Training and Advocacy and Dr. Alvin S. Concha, Chair of the Regional Ethics Monitoring Board (REMB) XI.
The basic research ethics principles are respect, beneficence and justice. And the goals for the training/workshop are to guide the participants the moral dimensions of the research, apply basic research ethics concept, and advocate quality ethical research particularly those researches which involves human participants or human data. The training consists of the following topics: Scientific Soundness, Research Ethics Principles (Beneficence, Non-Maleficence, Autonomy, and Justice), Declaration of Helsinki, Research Ethics Review, Informed Consent, Authorship, and Review of the Research Proposal, Ethics Review Systems, Ethics Review Committees, and Ethical Researcher.
The training did not only focus on the lecture of the speakers, but the participants did enthusiastically participate during the workshop or the role-playing activity. Each activity gives an essential concept of what is the right procedure in conducting research.
RHRDC XI recognizes the efforts of its member institution in the welfare and protection of the human participants involved in health researches. The packed of attendees who are eager to learn the basic research ethics training is one of the factors that gives RHRDC XI to continue training its members in harnessing the right and moral standards towards developing a good ethical research.
