Two students from the University of the Philippines Mindanao bag awards in the recently concluded 11th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week. Gayle B. Lagmay and Jessa Mae Villanueva represented the Regional Health Research and Development Consortium (RHRDC) XI and competed respectively in the Oral Research Paper Presentation and Poster Presentation.

Lagmay was hailed as winner in the Undergraduate Oral Research Paper Presentation. Her study entitled “Photocatalytic and Antimicrobial Studies of Polyhydroxybutyrate-CO-Hydroxyhexanoate (PHB-HH)/ TiO2 Nanocomposite Film” revealed that biofilms have a high potential as “an antimicrobial packaging material that can extend the shelf life of food and as a possible material for wastewater treatment in the textile industry”. Meanwhile, Villanueva received the 3rd place in the Undergraduate Poster Presentation Category.

With the theme “Research and Innovations in Health: Empowering and Transforming Communitites”, this year’s PNHRS Week Celebration was held last August 22-25, 2017 at the Philippine International Convention Center. As the host of the celebration, the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) aimed at gathering different stakeholders to learn, share, and promote collaborative efforts in contributing to research-based solutions of our nation’s health problems.
